Congressional Subcommittees on Labor, HHS
March 2006 Update
by Alan
Lopatin, Washington Representative, NARSVPD
The members who will control the destiny
for fiscal year 2007 funding for the Senior Corps are,
first and foremost, the leaders of the respective House
and Senate Subcommittees on Labor, Health and Human
Services, Education and Related Agencies (with the
respective Chairmen and Majority Members having the
greatest clout in the process). These are the
same Members as in the past session of Congress, with
one exception. The vacancy created on the House
Appropriations Subcommittee by the departure of
California Congressman Randy “Duke” Cunningham has been
filled by Utah Republican Michael Simpson.

While the National Association will support our request for
modest funding increases through testimony before the House
and Senate Appropriations Subcommittees, all Senior Corps
Directors are urged to contact their Senators and
Congressman and urge support for Senior Corps funding
increases in Fiscal Year 2007. It is critical that Senior
Corps Directors find Senators and Congressmen willing to go
to bat for the Senior Corps in the annual appropriations
process, not just this year, but in years to come. Let us
know about the heroes you find.
